Confederation 75
In 2024, Newfoundland and Labrador will proudly mark a historic milestone – the 75th anniversary of joining Canada as its 10th province. The province’s entry into Canada on April 1, 1949 was the latest chapter of a unique political evolution from colony to Dominion to province of Canada. Arguably the most studied aspect of Newfoundland and Labrador’s political history, confederation is a milestone that, even 75 years later, still sparks conversations.
The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced plans to commemorate 2024 as the 75th anniversary of Confederation. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will have a variety of opportunities to recognize and celebrate the anniversary throughout the year. The Confederation 75 Celebration Grant Program, which closed on March 1, will support community activities and celebrations, and heritage or Indigenous cultural projects that commemorate the anniversary.
